This 1971 AMC Gremlin X was purchased new by the seller from Modern Rambler Inc. in Milwaukee on April 8, 1971. The car was repainted black in 1975 and spent most of the time thereafter in storage. It has orange graphics and red vinyl and fabric upholstery and is powered by a 258ci inline-six linked with a three-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes the X Package, the Custom Interior Package, the Interior Appointment Package, the Custom Interior Trim Package, a glass liftgate, ET Mags wheels, front bucket seats, an AM/FM/cassette stereo, a Hurst shifter, a sunroof, and a dual exhaust system with headers and Flowmaster mufflers. This Gremlin is now offered with a window sticker, a copy of the original sales invoice, and a clean Wisconsin title in the seller’s name that lists the vehicle as a 1971 GREM.
Originally white, the car was refinished in Sherwin-Williams Sunfire black in 1975 after a 1974 accident that necessitated the replacement of the left quarter panel and right-front fender. Orange stripes with Gremlin X graphics have been applied, and exterior details include round headlights, a roof rack, a rear spoiler, a glass liftgate, and front and rear bumper guards. ET Mags 14″ wheels were added by the seller and wear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. The car was optioned with the Handling Package. Monroe air-adjustable shocks have been added. The seller reports recent wheel bearing repacking as well as replacement of braking components and universal joints. The emergency brake does not work.
The cabin features front bucket seats and a folding rear bench upholstered in red vinyl with buttoned red fabric surfaces, and interior appointments include an AM/FM/cassette radio, a heater, and a Hurst shifter.
The three-spoke sport steering wheel is mounted on a tilting column and frames an engine-turned instrument panel surround, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge for fuel level and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 78k miles, approximately 200 of which were reportedly added in the last few decades.
The 258ci inline-six was factory equipped with a single-barrel carburetor and was rated at 150 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque when new. The seller highlights that the cylinder head was previously ported, polished, and milled, while reported recent work has included fluid changes and replacement of the four-barrel carburetor, fuel pump, water pump, fan belt, alternator, and blower motor. The fuel tank was also boiled and renewed. Dual exhaust comprises headers and Flowmaster mufflers. The seller recommends replacing the windshield washer fluid tank.
Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed manual transmission. The clutch has been recently replaced, per the seller. Rust repair is noted on the inner rocker panels.
