This Mars Red 1978 Volkswagen Super Beetle convertible was acquired by the seller’s mother in the 1980s, and it is said to have since been kept in a climate-controlled garage when not in use. Its factory fuel injection was replaced with a carburetor around 10 years ago, after which the car was not driven. The vehicle was inherited in 2020 by the seller, who completed refurbishments for its 1.6-liter flat-four in 2026. Other details include a four-speed manual transaxle, a performance camshaft, a high-flow muffler, a Pioneer CD stereo, and black leatherette upholstery. This 1303 Super Beetle shows 81k miles, and it is offered at no reserve with spare parts and a clean Pennsylvania title in the seller’s name.

The body is said to have been repainted in the 1980s, and its Mars Red finish is accented by a bright hood spear and beltline moldings. Other details include pinstripes, rear stone guards, “elephant’s feet” taillights, and quad exhaust outlets.

The car was equipped at the factory with a MacPherson strut and coil spring front suspension, in place of the standard Beetle’s torsion bar setup. Braking is provided by four-wheel drums. The 15″ steel wheels are trimmed with VW-stamped covers, and they are mounted with Michelin tires that are due for replacement.

The black interior has leatherette upholstery, a center console with a cupholder, and a Pioneer CD stereo. The release levers for the tilting front seats are not working.

The four-spoke steering wheel features a Wolfsburg crest, and it fronts a 100-mph VDO speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 81k miles.

The seller tells us that the air-cooled flat-four displaces 1,675cc, and it has a performance camshaft, forged pistons, chrome-moly pushrods, high-flow heads, a high-flow muffler, and a two-barrel Weber carburetor. The car has not been driven since the engine’s build was completed, and some additional adjustments for the carburetor jetting may be needed.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle, and a replacement clutch assembly is also noted.

The seller adds that a stock carburetor, intake manifold, camshaft, and bearings are included in the sale.
