40-Year-Owned 1984 Porsche 944 5-Speed Project

This 1984 Porsche 944 was acquired by the seller in 1986, and it is finished in Guards Red over Black leather. The car features 15″ cookie-cutter alloy wheels, a five-speed manual transaxle, pop-up headlights, fog lights, and a Blaupunkt cassette stereo. The seller notes a timing belt failure on the 2.5-liter inline-four in August 2026 resulted in a loss of compression. This 944 shows 59k miles and is offered with the owner’s manual, Porsche workshop manuals, service records, spare parts, a clean Carfax report, and a clean New Jersey title in the seller’s name.

The car is finished in Guards Red (LM3A) and features pop-up headlights, fog lights. a rear spoiler, and a rear window wiper. The power antenna does not work, the right fog light lens is cracked, and there is a dent beneath the right door. The seller notes a few stone chips and scratches, which are depicted in the photo gallery.

The 15″ cookie-cutter alloy wheels are mounted with Dunlop D60A2 tires. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel power-assisted ventilated disc brakes. Wheel locks are included in the sale, per the seller.

The cabin is trimmed in Black leather and features power windows, a factory alarm system, and a Blaupunkt cassette stereo. The seller notes that the blower motor is not functional except for when it is used in air conditioning mode, and that the air conditioning needs to be charged. The sun visor clips are broken.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a 170-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 59k miles, approximately 41k of which were added under current ownership.

The water-cooled 2.5-liter M44 inline-four features Bosch engine management and was factory rated at 143 horsepower and 137 lb-ft of torque. The seller states that the timing belt failed upon reaching 1,500 RPMs while stationary in his driveway in August 2026. The engine lost compression as a result, and the seller notes it can be turned freely by hand. Borescope photos are provided in the gallery below.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transaxle.
