Four-Decades-Family-Owned 1965 Ford Mustang Fastback 289 5-Speed

This 1965 Ford Mustang fastback had last been registered in Texas in 1987 before spending decades stored according to the seller, who acquired it from a family member in 2018 and subsequently refurbished it. Work involved a color change to dark blue with stripes, installation of GT-style equipment and a Pony interior, rebuilding and installing a 1967 289ci V8, and retrofitting a Tremec five-speed manual transmission. The engine features a roller camshaft, Holley 4160 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor, a JEGS aluminum intake manifold, HEI electronic ignition, an aluminum radiator, a Painless wiring harness, and stainless-steel Tri-Y headers, and the car is further equipped with 15″ American Racing Torq Thrust wheels, front disc brakes, a Hurst shifter, and auxiliary gauges. Driven ~1k miles since completion of the work, this ’65 Mustang is now offered with the removed factory drivetrain and a Texas title in the seller’s name.

Originally finished in Honey Gold (C), the body was refinished in blue with white stripes as part of the work. The seller states that new rear quarter panels, taillight panel, front and rear lower valances, outer door skins, rear outer wheelhouses, and trunk drop-offs were installed along with GT-style equipment. The metalwork and paint were completed by Surefire Mustang in Humble, Texas, and new exterior door handles were installed in February 2022.

The American Racing Torq Thrust 15″ wheels are mounted with 225/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A front tires and 215/70R15 Cooper Cobra Radial GT rear tires. The seller states that the suspension components were replaced with the exception of the original rear leaf springs. Front disc brakes, new brake lines, and a chrome Monte Carlo bar were installed during the refurbishment, and the seller notes that the car would benefit from a front-end alignment.

Originally Ivy Gold inside, the interior has been redone with two-tone Pony upholstery, and the dashboard was refinished to match. The seller states that the driver’s side floor pan was replaced as part of the work, and the factory AM radio remains installed but is not connected and no speakers are fitted.

A column-mounted tachometer and under-dash gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, and voltage have been added. The five-digit odometer shows 16,127 miles, fewer than 1,000 of which were added under current ownership. The seller states that the total mileage is unknown and notes that the alternator warning light remains illuminated despite the charging system functioning.

The 289ci V8 was rebuilt in 2024 by Dawson Hotrods & Kustoms of Kingwood, Texas. The engine was sourced from a 1967 Mustang and modified with a roller camshaft, Holley 4160 600-cfm four-barrel carburetor, a JEGS aluminum intake manifold, HEI electronic ignition, an aluminum radiator, a Painless wiring harness, and stainless-steel Tri-Y headers. The seller states that the rebuilt engine has accumulated fewer than 1,000 miles. A small dent is noted on the underside of the hood caused by contact with a tall air-cleaner lid.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Tremec five-speed manual transmission installed in October 2022. A new clutch kit was installed in August 2023, and a Flowmaster dual exhaust system was added in July 2024.

In-process photos of the work are presented in the gallery.

The original two-barrel 289ci engine and original three-speed manual transmission are included with the sale.

The title notes the odometer reading as Exempt.
