M50B20-Powered 1989 BMW 316i Coupe 5-Speed at No Reserve

This 1989 BMW 316i coupe was acquired by the seller in 2019 and subsequently fitted with a 2.0-liter M50B20 inline-six and a five-speed manual transmission as part of a build completed in 2021. Repainted in black, the car wears a fiberglass ducktail spoiler and fender flares and rides on 16″ Borbet alloy wheels accompanied by ST Suspensions front coilovers as well as E46-sourced front and E36-sourced rear disc brakes. Inside, the stripped cabin houses Recaro bucket seats with Schroth harnesses along with a roll bar, a Luisi steering wheel, and an Android-based head unit. Further modifications are said to include a dual-mass flywheel and a Sachs clutch assembly as well as a 200-cell catalytic converter and an Eisenmann muffler. This modified E30 coupe is now offered at no reserve in Ettlingen, Germany, with German registration.

Finished from the factory in Lachssilber Metallic (203), the body underwent rust repairs and was repainted black as part of the build. The seller tells us that the fenders and quarter panels were widened with the addition of sheetmetal as well as fiberglass flares. Projector-style headlights and fog lights with tinted lenses are equipped up front, while a fiberglass ducktail spoiler is fitted out back. Further details include a front lip spoiler, and black-finished kidney grilles.

The 16″ Borbet alloy wheels are mounted with 215/40 Toyo Proxes tires. Braking is handled by E46-sourced front and E36-sourced rear disc brakes coupled with upgraded 5×120 hubs. Additional chassis upgrades include ST Suspensions adjustable front coilovers, Z3 M–sourced front control arms, aftermarket rear camber adjustment brackets, and various polyurethane bushings.

The cabin was stripped and a bedliner coating was applied in place of the factory sound-deadening material in the course of the build. Recaro Pole Position bucket seats trimmed in black cloth are paired with Schroth harnesses and sit ahead on a bolt-in roll bar. The dash and center console are wrapped in microsuede, and the headliner and pillar trim has been removed along with the rear bench seat. The power-window switches have been relocated to the doors, which wear aftermarket plastic panels with cloth pulls. Aftermarket speakers have been installed along with a subwoofer and amplifier mounted in place of the rear seat.

The three-spoke Luisi steering wheel is mounted to a MOMO hub and accompanied by an aftermarket shift knob. The VDO instrument cluster has been fitted with aftermarket gauge faces and has a 260-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary readouts, though it is not hooked up. A clock and additional auxiliary gauges are fitted in the center stack along with an Android-based head unit connected to a backup camera. The six-digit odometer shows 257k kilometers (~160k miles), though the seller states that true mileage is unknown.

The 2.0-liter M50B20 inline-six was installed by Klaus Wipfler at Kfz-Werkstatt circa 2019. The seller believes that it has approximately 120k kilometers (~75k miles). An electric cooling fan and a dual-mass flywheel were fitted as part of the engine change along with a 200-cell catalytic converter and an Eisenmann muffler. The following parts are also said to have been replaced:

  • Water pump
  • Starter
  • Drive belt
  • Valve cover gasket
  • Thermostat
  • Various coolant and vacuum hoses
  • Fuel tank, pump, and lines

The seller states that a short-ratio five-speed manual transmission and Sachs performance clutch assembly were installed as part of the project. They also note that the underbody underwent rust repair before being undercoated and that an area of rust remains on the center tunnel next to the transmission.

The vehicle is being sold on its German registration, which serves as an ownership document in Germany. The car is not currently registered for road use.
