Is a promotion really a promotion if it doesn’t come with benefits?
Anybody who wants to climb the corporate ladder has to accept that more status is going to come with more responsibility. The powers that be don’t (always) make up these positions just to make people feel important; they also come with real duties that you are going to have to perform if you want to keep your shiny new title. It is never wise to underestimate that.
At the same time, the main reason an employee will take a promotion isn’t always because they are fiending for that extra power. More often than not, they are focused on the pay bump that should come with it. In a just workplace, more responsibility means more money, but unfortunately, that doesn’t always turn out to be the case. There are employers who will offer their workers a step up, but then not give them the extra compensation to motivate them to do it.
While many people will take the promotion regardless, it is one sure-fire way to get a decent employee looking for work elsewhere. It is one of the most obvious signs that their efforts are not truly appreciated by the company.
