1959 Porsche 356A Cabriolet

This 1959 Porsche 356A is a Reutter-bodied cabriolet that was initially delivered to Krauss in Nuremberg, Germany and refurbished in 2011, including a repaint, a reupholstered interior, and the installation of a replacement 1,750cc flat-four, which was rebuilt since the car was previously sold on BaT in July 2024. Additional work since then has involved rebuilding the Weber carburetors, overhauling the brakes, replacing the flywheel, and installing Koni shocks. Finished in Ivory over tan leather, the car is also equipped with a four-speed manual transaxle, chrome 15” wheels, amber driving lights, headlight stone guards, and VDO instrumentation. This 356A is now offered by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, at no reserve with a Porsche Technical Service letter, a copy of the Kardex, a tool kit, and transferable New York registration.

The Reutter-built bodywork left the factory finished in Ivory (5704) and was repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment following replacement of  the hood, battery box, and floors by Hamilton Classics of Martindale, Texas. A replacement black Haartz Stayfast canvas top with a padded herringbone headliner was also installed, and the matching boot is retained with polished Tenax fasteners. Additional details include a single-grille engine lid, amber driving lights, headlight stone guards, gold Porsche 1600 badging, and body-color bumpers with chrome overriders. Imperfections are pointed out by the seller in the gallery.

Chrome-finished 15” wheels wear Porsche-crest hubcaps and were mounted with 185/70 Vredestein Sprint Classic tires in 2025. The brake system was overhauled in September 2024, including replacement of the master cylinder, wheel cylinders, shoes, hoses, and lines. The steering shock and right tie rod were also replaced at that time, and Koni shocks were installed in April 2025.

The cabin was re-trimmed in tan leather sourced from Autos International, and sound deadening material was applied under the black rubber floor covering and oatmeal squareweave carpets. Lap belts were added in 2024 and the heater cables were replaced.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames green-letter VDO instrumentation fitted with LED bulbs, consisting of a central tachometer flanked by a 120-mph speedometer and a combination gauge, while a voltmeter has been mounted below the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 61k miles. An access panel has been added to the battery box floor in the front trunk.

The replacement 1,750cc Type 616/15 flat-four was sourced from a 1964 356C and was rebuilt by Werks Inc. of Sea Cliff, New York, in April 2025 along with the dual Weber carburetors. An oil change was performed and the sump-plate gasket was replaced in August 2026.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Type 716/0 four-speed manual transaxle, which received replacement side flange seals in April 2025. A replacement flywheel was also installed during the work.

The copy of the Kardex lists the factory colors and serial numbers along with a completion date of June 3, 1959.

The vehicle is being sold on its New York registration, which serves as an ownership document in New York.
