1973 Citroen SM

This Or de Simiane 1973 Citroën is a North American-market SM that was reportedly stored for a period before it was acquired by the seller in 2020. Work between 2024 and 2025 consisted of rebuilds of the hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, steering, and four-wheel disc brake systems along with repairs to the drivetrain, and the car is further equipped with 15″ steel wheels, self-centering power steering, a power antenna, Tobacco leather upholstery, an AM/FM stereo, air conditioning, power windows, and front bucket seats. This SM is now offered in Illinois with the owner’s manual, records, and a Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.

Styled by Citroën’s chief designer, Robert Opron, the SM debuted in 1970 sporting a Kamm tail and tapered bodywork with a narrower rear track than the front. This example is finished in Or de Simiane (Gold, AC326) and features a power antenna, rain-sensing windshield wipers, quad headlights, bright bumpers, and dual exhaust outlets. Rust is noted in the underbody and rocker areas, and the body access panel and rear middle lens were replaced in 2025.

This is a relist after the vehicle was previously sold on BaT in August 2026 and the winning bidder failed to follow through with their commitment to purchase. This was not due to any fault with the vehicle. The winner’s participation on BaT has been restricted and their buyer’s fee was not refunded.

Work in 2025 consisted of rebuilds of the hydropneumatic self-leveling suspension, steering, and four-wheel disc brake systems, and the car is further equipped with 15″ steel wheels, full covers, and self-centering power steering.

The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in Tobacco leather, and interior appointments include an AM/FM stereo, an electric rear window defroster, air conditioning, and power windows. The suspension height is set with a lever to the left of the driver’s seat. There is a tear in the driver’s seat upholstery. Both front door windows were repaired in 2024, and the shifter assembly was replaced in 2025.

The single-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a tilting and telescoping column and frames Jaeger instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline accompanied by an array of indicator lights. Auxiliary gauges indicating water temperature, fuel level, and oil temperature are located in the center of the dash along with a clock. The five-digit odometer shows 48k miles, approximately 2,250 of which were added under current ownership.

The 3.0-liter V6 was sourced from Maserati—a subsidiary of Citroën between 1968 and 1975—and features three Weber two-barrel carburetors for a factory rating of 190 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque. The seller notes that they are unsure if the exhaust valves have been replaced, and images in the gallery depict oil-covered areas on the engine and suspension. Between 2024 and 2025, the following was performed:

  • Starter removed, battery and battery cable replaced
  • Fuel tank removed and reinstalled. Fuel sender unit replaced with a used unit
  • Air filter and throttle cable replaced
  • Carburetors and cold-enrichment valves repaired
  • Replaced three leaking accelerator pumps
  • Alternator belt replaced
  • Exhaust components fabricated
  • Engine oil and filter replaced
  • Coolant replaced
  • Starter rebuilt and alternator repaired

Power is sent to the front wheels through a BorgWarner three-speed automatic transaxle.

Records detailing the 2024-2025 work are displayed in the gallery.

The title lists the odometer reading as Exempt.
