2,165cc-Powered 1963 Volkswagen Beetle

This 1963 Volkswagen Beetle is said to have been registered with its previous owner in California for 15 years before it was acquired by the current owner in 2018. The car was the subject of a multi-year refurbishment, with work reportedly including rebuilding the air-cooled flat-four to displace 2,165cc, overhauling the four-speed manual transaxle, a repaint in green, powder coating the floor pans in black, and re-trimming the seats in tan leatherette with cloth inserts. Additional details include a folding fabric sunroof, 15″ Fuchs-style wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, dual Empi carburetors, inner rear window louvers, a Pioneer Bluetooth stereo, an aftermarket sound system, and Coco mats. This Beetle is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a set of stock steel wheels, a set of California black plates, and a clean California title in the owner’s name.

The body was removed from the chassis during the refurbishment before it was repainted in the current shade of green. The seller tells us that replacement trim, moldings, glass, and door handles were installed. The bumpers are said to have been re-chromed, and additional details include a left door mirror, a retractable antenna, and running boards.

Chrome-finished 15″ Empi Fuchs-style wheels are mounted with American Classic and Nankang tires with whitewall inserts. The car was retrofitted with four-wheel disc brakes during the refurbishment, and the front suspension has been lowered.

The front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in tan leatherette with houndstooth cloth inserts, and they are complemented by color-coordinated door panels and carpets. A Pioneer Bluetooth head unit has been installed in the glove compartment, and it is linked with an ARC Audio amplifier and aftermarket speakers. A custom speaker panel and rear window louvers have been installed behind the rear seat back, and Coco mats line the footwells.

A two-spoke steering wheel fronts a 90-mph speedometer and a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.

The replacement air-cooled dual-port flat-four was rebuilt and modified to displace 2,165cc in 2018, according to the seller. Additional equipment includes dual Empi carburetors, aftermarket air cleaners, and finned alloy valve covers. The seller tells us that a replacement wiring harness was also installed during the refurbishment.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle that is said to have been overhauled during the refurbishment. An aftermarket stainless-steel exhaust system has been installed, and the floor pans were powder coated in gloss black. Additional photos of the underside condition are viewable in the gallery below.

A set of stock wheels with hubcaps and hub adaptors is included in the sale.
