1987 Alfa Romeo Milano Gold Callaway Twin Turbo at No Reserve

This 1987 Alfa Romeo Milano Gold is believed to be one of two Milano sedans fitted with a twin-turbo kit from Callaway Engineering of Old Lyme, Connecticut. It was acquired by the seller in 2016 and subsequently fitted with a Turbo Evoluzione–style fiberglass body kit and underwent a repaint in metallic blue, an interior re-trim in black leather and microsuede, and various mechanical upgrades as part of a multi-year build completed by Redline Group of Lafayette, Colorado, and Alfa Import Center of Charlotte, North Carolina. The car rides on 17″ HRE forged multi-piece wheels paired with Koni shocks at all four corners and has power steering along with Brembo front disc brakes. Inside, Corbeau bucket seats are accompanied by a Zender steering wheel and a Blaupunkt head unit as well as air conditioning and a power sunroof. The 2.5-liter Busso V6 is fitted with twin IHI turbochargers, dual air-to-air top-mount intercoolers, and a custom-fabricated exhaust system, while shifting is through a five-speed manual transaxle. This Milano is now offered at no reserve as part of the Tons Of Gas Auto Collection in North Carolina with a Certificate of Authenticity from Callaway Engineering, build records from current ownership, and a clean Montana title in the name of the seller’s LLC.

Styled under the supervision of chief Centro Stile Alfa Romeo stylist Ermanno Cressoni, the Milano was marketed outside the US as the Alfa 75 and built from 1985 through 1992. This example was fitted with a fiberglass body kit styled after the 500-unit Turbo Evoluzione homologation special from 1987 and repainted in metallic blue under current ownership.

A Euro-style grille is fitted up front, and the hood wears a custom scoop. Further details include body-color side trim as well as a power sunroof and side mirrors. The seller notes a scratch on the rear bumper cover and reports that one of the rear reflector end caps is missing. Various paint imperfections are shown up close in the gallery along with a crack in the right taillight. The Carfax report lists an October 2005 noting fire damage, though no other information is provided.

The 17″ HRE forged multi-piece wheels feature gray centers and are mounted with 215/40 Falken Azenis rubber. Braking is handled by aluminum two-piston Brembo calipers over vented, slotted, and cross-drilled rotors up front, while inboard-mounted ATE units clamp down on solid discs out back. The power steering and brakes were overhauled as part of the work completed in 2016 and 2017.

The Corbeau front bucket seats are trimmed in black leather and microsuede, which extends to the rear bench. The headliner is said to be trimmed in Alcantara, and the cabin is lined with Dynamat sound deadening. The dashboard and steering column were replaced circa 2017, while work in 2022 involved overhauling the air conditioning system as well as performing wiring repairs. Further interior details include a Blaupunkt Colombo 130 BT head unit, a digital clock, and a heater as well as power windows, mirrors, and door locks.

The three-spoke Zender steering wheel wears an Alfa Romeo–branded horn button and frames Veglia Borletti instrumentation with orange font that consists of a 160-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. A Callaway-branded boost gauge is affixed to the left side of the dash. The six-digit odometer indicates 80k miles, approximately 500 of which were added under current ownership. The seller tells us that the warning lights do not work properly, and the speedometer and tachometer work intermittently.

A matching spare 17″ HRE forged multi-piece wheel is stored in the trunk and included in the sale.

The 2.5-liter Busso V6 was fitted with a Callaway twin-turbocharger kit in the 1980s, according to the seller. The setup features twin IHI RHB5 turbochargers as well as dual air-to-air top-mount intercoolers. Work from 2016 to 2017 involved removing the engine and various accessories, applying a thermal coating and Dynamat to the firewall and engine bay, replacing the throttle rod ends and stainless-steel control rod for the throttle linkage, and more as detailed in the included records from Redline Group of Lafayette, Colorado. The engine was later reinstalled at Alfa Import Center of Charlotte, North Carolina, in 2022. Additional work at that time included fabricating a custom airbox and exhaust system as well as rebuilding the alternator and replacing the timing belt, water pump, coolant hoses, and engine mounts.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted, five-speed manual transaxle, and the suspension incorporates an independent double-wishbone front setup with torsion bars as well as a de Dion tube rear suspension with coil springs. Work in 2016 and 2017 involved removing the transaxle and various underside components, powder-coating various suspension parts in semi-gloss black, refinishing the fuel tank, fitting polyurethane bushings, replacing the hubs and axle shafts, rebuilding the clutch assembly, overhauling the CV axles, adding Eibach rear springs, fitting upgraded torsion bars, and rebuilding the steering rack. Subsequent updates in 2022 included changing the tailhousing bushing, adding a braided stainless-steel clutch hose, and replacing the clutch cylinders.

A Certificate of Authenticity from Callaway Engineering is included in the sale.

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned October 2005 fire damage entry.
