1973 MG Midget Project at No Reserve

This 1973 MG Midget is a running and driving project that was repainted in orange before its 2018 acquisition by the seller, who tells us that subsequent work involved servicing the front disc and rear drum brakes, reupholstering the seats in black vinyl, and rebuilding the 1,275cc inline-four with a resurfaced cylinder head, a Swiftune camshaft, ARP head studs, and high-compression pistons as well as replacing the black soft top and the tires. The car is further equipped with a four-speed manual gearbox, a high-torque starter motor, a Pertronix electronic ignition kit, a Pacesetter exhaust muffler, a roll bar, dual mirrors, chrome bumpers, 13″ Rostyle wheels, a wooden shift knob, crank windows, and a Jensen AM/FM radio with a cassette player. The seller notes that the engine has low compression and recommends boring the cylinders. This Midget is offered at no reserve with a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT) certificate, Haynes repair manuals, parts receipts, spare parts, and a clean Oregon title in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in Blaze, and body filler was applied near the headlights before a repaint was carried out under previous ownership. The replacement black soft top was installed in 2025, and additional exterior details include a black roll bar, dual mirrors, black rocker panels with Midget badges, and a chrome front bumper and rear bumperettes with overriders. Damage is noted on the front bumper cover, the paint finish is dull, the windshield washer fluid does not spray, mismatched touch-up paint has been applied, and the trunk and door lock cylinders accept a different key than the ignition. The seller notes evidence of a rust repair on the right-rear sill, and paint meter readings from multiple body panels can be viewed in the gallery below.

Rostyle 13″ wheels were mounted with Achilles tires in January 2025. Braking is handled by front discs and rear drums that were serviced in 2018.

The seating surfaces were reupholstered in black vinyl in 2025, while replacement door panels were installed in 2026. Appointments include a wooden shift knob, crank windows, and a Jensen AM/FM radio with a cassette player. The seller notes burns from the cigarette lighter on the center console from previous ownership.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including of a 100-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The turn signals do not self-cancel. The five-digit odometer shows 70k miles and is inaccurate according to the seller, who estimates having driven the car 200 miles under their ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 1,275cc inline-four has been fitted with a high-torque starter motor, a Pertronix Ignitor II electronic ignition kit, and a Pacesetter exhaust muffler, and a rebuild under current ownership included installing a resurfaced cylinder head, performing a valve job, and fitting a Swiftune camshaft, ARP head studs, and high-compression pistons. The piston rings were serviced circa 2023, though the engine still has low compression, and the seller recommends boring the cylinders.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox. A replacement clutch kit was installed in September 2018, and the flywheel was resurfaced in October 2018. The seller notes corrosion on various suspension and underbody components, and additional underside photos can be viewed in the gallery below.

The British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate indicates that the car was built on March 20th, 1973, and lists the factory serial numbers, colors, and equipment. Haynes repair manuals, parts receipts, and various spare components are also included in the sale.
