396-Powered 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS Sport Coupe 4-Speed

This 1965 Chevrolet Impala SS sport coupe was acquired by the current owner, the former proprietor of an auto body shop for three decades, in 2017 as a non-running and partially-stripped project that came with an uninstalled and overhauled 1965-sourced 396ci V8 but was missing a transmission. Subsequent work involved the installation of a Muncie four-speed manual as well as a repaint in white. The car rides on Vöxx 17″ wheels and has front disc brakes, a 12-bolt rear end with a 3.73:1 Positraction differential, and a dual exhaust system fed by long-tube headers. Cabin appointments include black vinyl upholstery, front bucket seats, a Hurst shifter, and a CD player housed in the glovebox. This Impala SS is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with a handwritten log and a clean Tennessee title in the owner’s name.

Work in 2018 involved stripping the car and repairing rust with replacement metal before a repaint in white, according to the seller. The window glass was also replaced at that time, and the trim was refreshed. Imperfections on the drip rails and paint chips are noted.

Vöxx BG Rod Works 17″ wheels are mounted with General Altimax RT tires. Red calipers are fitted over cross-drilled discs up front, and the seller notes that Gabriel shocks have been installed.

The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in black vinyl, and details include a center console, a CD player mounted in the glovebox, and a Hurst shifter. The factory push-button radio does not work. The seller highlights that the interior was re-done as part of the project, as the components and upholstery had been stripped before the owner’s purchase.

The two-spoke steering wheel fronts a horizontal 120-mph speedometer flanked by SS-branded auxiliary gauges. A trio of supplementary readouts is mounted below the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 28k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. The seller notes that the fuel level sending unit was replaced in preparation for the sale.

The seller notes that the 396ci V8 was sourced from a 1965 example and was overhauled and fitted with a revised camshaft under prior ownership, and was installed in the car shortly after the owner’s 2017 purchase. A replacement fuel tank and electric fuel pump have also been installed. A photo of the engine stamping is provided in the gallery below.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission that was installed in 2018 and a 12-bolt rear end with a 3.73:1 Positraction differential. The ring and pinion, carrier, and bearings were replaced around 2021, per the seller. Long-tube headers feed the dual exhaust system.
