TL;DR
- Google introduced Rambler for Gboard earlier this year, removing filler words and cleaning up your voice input for text conversion.
- Now Google Translate appears to be preparing its own similar mode called Smart assist.
- It’s not yet clear if Smart assist would have some of the same limitations as Rambler.
Voice-to-text sounds like a great idea… until you actually listen closely to how people really speak. While we expect the written word to be clear and formal, speech is often anything but — and that’s exactly why we have tools like Rambler in Gboard, able to compensate for our messy utterances. Now Google Translate looks like it could be cooking up a similar system of its own.
