This 1951 Vincent Comet was acquired by its previous owner on BaT in November 2023 and was then brought to the selling dealer, Big D Cycle of Dallas, Texas, where the four-speed gearbox, electrical system, wheels, drum brakes, front end, and rear suspension system were rebuilt. The motorcycle was previously refurbished in 1994 and it was subsequently awarded a blue ribbon at the 1998 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance. The bike is powered by a 499cc OHV single, and features include a brass Amal carburetor, a chrome exhaust system, a two-up Mastas saddle, a Girdraulic fork, a cantilevered swingarm, polished fenders, dual side stands, and 20″ and 19″ wire-spoke wheels. This Comet is now offered in Texas with its Concours blue ribbon, a dating record from the Vincent Owner’s Club, refurbishment documentation, copies of manufacturer’s checklists, and a clean Colorado title.

The motorcycle is finished in black with gold pinstripes and Vincent graphics on the fuel tank. Other details include polished fenders, a chrome-rimmed headlight bucket, a taillight, a two-up saddle, folding passenger foot pegs, a center stand, and two side stands. A registration placard is affixed to the left side of the fork, and the front fender features a number plate with the bike’s year listed in gold lettering. The polished fenders were replaced and a Mastas two-up seat was fitted in October 2024.

The 20″ front and 19″ rear chrome rims featuring red and black-painted centers were replaced, laced with stainless-steel spokes, and mounted with Avon Speedster MKII tires in October 2024. Stopping power is provided by leading-shoe drum brakes at both ends. Suspension consists of a black-finished Vincent Girdraulic fork as well as a pair of shocks fitted to the cantilevered swingarm. Additional work in October 2024 included relining the brake shoes, replacing the shocks, and rebuilding the front and rear suspension systems.

The chrome handlebar is equipped with a single bar-end mirror on the left as well as chrome switchgear and levers. Instrumentation consists of a Smiths 125-mph speedometer and a Miller ammeter mounted into the headlight bucket. The five-digit odometer was reset when the speedometer was rebuilt in July 2022, and it now shows 188 miles. True mileage is unknown. The wiring harness and switches were replaced in October 2024.

The 499cc OHV four-stroke single was factory rated at 28 horsepower and it breathes through a single brass Amal carburetor and a low-mount chrome exhaust system. The motor was overhauled as part of the 1994 refurbishment, and work performed in October 2024 included installing the Amal carburetor and rebuilding the Lucas magneto and Miller six-volt dynamo, the latter of which was outfitted with an electronic regulator.

Power is sent to the rear wheel through a Vincent Burman four-speed transmission that is shifted on the right as well as a drive chain turning under a black guard. The transmission was rebuilt in October 2024.

The characters RC/1/9799/C stamped on the rear frame member match the characters stamped on the steering stem of the upper frame member.

The motorcycle was displayed at the 1998 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and received a blue ribbon.

Documentation of the 1994 refurbishment is included in the sale along with a dating record from the Vincent Owner’s Club and copies of manufacturer’s checklists.
