Question of the Week: What’s Your Favorite British Supercar?—WINNER’S UPDATE

WINNER’S ANNOUNCEMENT:

We’re back to announce the winner for our Question of the Week, whereupon our victor will accept a $25 credit for a hat or T-shirt from the BaT Gear Store and the acclaim of their peers.

Our question was: What’s your favorite British supercar?

The definition of a “supercar” is a matter of great philosophical debate, and we were thrown back to a 2022 QotW on the very topic. Semantics aside, we’re leaning heavily on the People’s Choice (the most-liked comment) this week—congratulations to @GaryRoach, who nominated the legendary Jaguar XJ220:

The XJ220 is a 1990s British supercar icon, without a doubt! But we’ll save the superlatives and kick it over to Car and Driver Contributing Editor Brendan McAleer for his take on this example, which first crossed the auction block in September 2025.

The discussion thread was varied, of course, and here are some notable mentions:

The McLaren F1 was another popular choice this week.

British motoring journalist and driver Henry Catchpole reviewed the F1 and the Ferrari F40 against their analogue rivals in 2013, and we resurfaced the footage in a 2019 Video Inspiration post.

Why not!

Its street-legal weapon status surely gave it a license to be considered a supercar back in its day.

And we’ll wrap up the discussion with a nomination from @CarDogThreePedals that shows how varied the term “supercar” can be:

Its 170-mph top speed was certainly supercar territory back in 1977.

That’s it for this week’s Question of the Week! Thanks to everyone who participated, and congratulations once again to our winner, GaryRoach. We’ll be back with a new Question of the Week soon!

ORIGINAL POST:

Welcome to the BaT Question of the Week! For those unfamiliar, here are the rules: we ask an automotive-themed question, and the author of our favorite answer from the comments is awarded a $25 credit to the BaT Gear Store.

We recently celebrated the final Bicester Scramble of 2026 in partnership with our UK Local Partners Sports Purpose and Chase Classics, and man were there some impressive vehicles there! And in honor of that, we’re going to celebrate a particular niche within the world of British motoring with this week’s question:

What’s your favorite British supercar?

Supercars aren’t necessarily what come to mind when we think of quintessentially British vehicles, when—as Goodwood once put it—“items of such brashness and vulgarity are unbecoming.” Despite that notion, the Great Island has produced some fantastic supercars throughout the years—certainly more than you might think. Take, for example, the Spectre R42: the brainchild of Ray Christopher and a Brit’s take on the GT40 (itself the first Ford UK venture based on a Lola chassis).

We’ll keep the rest of the examples to ourselves lest we spoil the discussion. Off you go!

What’s your favorite British supercar?

Tell us your suggestions in the comments, and give a thumbs-up to any nominations that grab your attention. We’ll announce the winner on Monday.
