1948 Mercury Eight Woodie Wagon

This 1948 Mercury Eight four-door station wagon was refurbished under previous ownership and was formerly part of the Nick Alexander collection. Power is provided by a 239ci flathead V8 linked to a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission and a Columbia two-speed rear axle. Finished in Tucson Tan with wood bodywork over red leather upholstery, equipment includes 15″ steel wheels, hydraulic drum brakes, and three rows of bench seating. The car was acquired by the owner in 2026 and is now offered on dealer consignment in Idaho with service records and a clean Montana title in the name of the owner’s LLC.

The steel panels are finished in Tucson Tan, and the coachwork incorporates maple framing and mahogany paneling. Equipment includes a dark brown artificial leather roof covering, a split rear tailgate, a cowl vent, a driver-side mirror, and driving lights. Chrome brightwork encompasses the vertical-bar grille, window trim, side moldings, and bumpers. Rear fender skirts are installed, and dual exhaust outlets exit beneath the rear bumper.

Steel 15″ wheels wear chrome hubcaps with trim rings and are mounted with 7.10-section Firestone Deluxe Champion wide-whitewall tires. A matching spare is mounted to the tailgate under a metal cover. The suspension is equipped with anti-sway stabilizers and blue tubular shock absorbers. Braking is handled by four-wheel hydraulic drums. Service in 2011 included replacing the master cylinder, brake hoses, wheel cylinders, and rear brake shoes. The wheel bearings and grease seals were also repacked.

The cabin houses three rows of bench seating upholstered in red leather alongside wood-slat headliner strips and exposed wood door and side panels. Interior equipment includes black rubber floor mats, front lap belts, manual crank windows, a glove compartment, and an AM radio. The steel dashboard is finished in painted woodgrain and houses an analog clock and fresh-air heater controls. The window regulator tracks and rollers were repaired in 2011.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames a 110-mph speedometer along with auxiliary readouts for battery charge, coolant temperature, fuel level, and oil pressure. An Equus coolant temperature gauge is mounted beneath the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 71k miles. Total mileage is unknown.

The 239ci flathead V8 is equipped with a single downdraft carburetor, an electric fuel pump, and an oil-bath air cleaner. Upper radiator hoses display Ford U.S.A. script, and Fenton headers feed a dual exhaust system. Maintenance performed in 2011 included overhauling the carburetor, resealing the oil pan, and replacing the rear main seal, engine mounts, and cooling hoses.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a column-shifted three-speed manual transmission and a Columbia two-speed rear end.

A binder of service records, historical literature, operating manuals, and an Early Ford V8 Club Rouge Award accompany the car.
