328-Mile 1982 Clenet Series II Cabriolet

This Clenet Series II cabriolet is #174 of a planned 250 examples produced, and it was purchased new in January 1982 by the late James G. Robinson, who in 1988 founded the film-production company Morgan Creek Productions, who were behind films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, The Last of the Mohicans, and Major League. Originally assigned to Robinson’s Subaru distributorship, the car has remained in his collection since and now shows 328 miles. It is finished in tan with brown fenders, and power comes from a 351ci V8 paired with a four-speed AOD automatic transmission. Features include power steering and front disc brakes, 15″ chrome wire wheels, driving lamps, dual spotlights, cut glass quarter windows, a tan soft top, and wood exterior trim. Inside, the cabin features Recaro bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in tan leather, and amenities include burl wood trim, power windows, air conditioning, and a Pioneer cassette stereo. This Clenet Series II cabriolet is offered in Maryland by the seller on behalf of the James G. Robinson’s estate with original purchase and correspondence with the Clenet team, and paperwork, manufacturer’s literature, a clean Carfax report, and a Montana title under an LLC.

Clenet Coachworks was founded by French-American designer Alain Clenet in the mid-1970s. The company launched its neo-classical Cabriolet in California in 1976 and utilized steel bodywork and fiberglass fenders fitted over a Ford-sourced chassis and drivetrain. The four-passenger Series II Cabriolet was introduced in 1979, and production continued until the Series III was introduced in 1982.

This example is finished in tan with brown fenders and orange pinstriping. Features include driving lamps with stone guards, trumpet horns, an etched glass hood ornament, a centrally hinged hood, faux external exhaust pipes, dual spotlights, cut glass quarter windows, a tan soft top, and wood trim on the running boards, decklid, and platform-style rear bumper. A collection of paint meter readings is presented in the gallery.

Polished plaques on the quarter panels list the car as #174 of a planned 250 examples.

The 15″ chrome wire wheels feature Clenet Coachworks Cabriolet-branded center caps, and they are mounted with 235/75 Goodyear whitewall radial tires. A spare wheel is stowed under a brown hard cover out back. The car features independent front suspension with hydraulic shocks inside coil springs as well as rear trailing arms with coil springs and angle-mounted shocks, power steering, and power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.

The cabin features Recaro bucket seats and a rear bench trimmed in tan leather along with matching door panels and a center console. Burl wood trim accents the dashboard and door panels, and brown carpets line the floors. Amenities include power windows, air conditioning, a Pioneer cassette stereo, and front and rear cigar lighters.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including an 85-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. Auxiliary gauges, a quartz clock, and an array of warning lights are mounted in the center of the dash. The five-digit odometer shows 328 miles.

The 351ci Windsor V8 features a polished air cleaner assembly atop a single downdraft carburetor, and the car is equipped with a dual exhaust system. A replacement battery was installed in preparation for the sale, and an oil change was also performed.

Power is sent to the rear wheels via an AOD four-speed automatic transmission.

The Coachbuilding Agreement is dated January 26, 1982, and lists delivery to Subaru Mid-America Inc., an automobile distributor that was owned at the time by James G. Robinson. Factory literature, a business card with Alain Clenet’s personal phone number, and correspondence between Mr. Robinson, Clenet, and other members of Clenet leadership will also accompany the vehicle.

Handwritten notations on a period Clenet brochure show a list price of $78,500 before being discounted by Mr. Clenet, reflecting the personal relationship between Clenet and Mr. Robinson, who later paid a $10k deposit in December 1981 and a final $55k for the car on January 28, 1982.

The Carfax report shows no accidents or other damage.

The seller is listing the car on behalf of an estate, and a representative of the estate will handle the transaction.
