Woman goes to throw away the garbage and finds a little kitten who walks right up to her, leading to an unexpected addition to the family

There’s a running joke among cat owners that you don’t actually adopt cats. You just find them in the most random places and somehow end up taking them home. Under cars, behind dumpsters, in parking lots, or occasionally right inside the trash. The Cat Distribution System apparently has no interest in making the adoption process particularly glamorous.

We’ve seen plenty of stories about people going out to run a simple errand and returning with a new feline family member. You might leave the house to buy groceries, take a walk, or throw away the garbage, only to find yourself responsible for a little creature who now expects three meals a day and unlimited cuddles. Apparently, that’s just how cat ownership works.

One couple recently experienced this firsthand when they went outside to throw away their trash and spotted a little fox-like kitten hanging around the communal bins. The poor baby was licking grease off discarded McDonald’s packaging, desperately trying to find something to eat.

He was filthy, greasy, and clearly in need of help, but rescuing him was surprisingly easy. The kitten walked straight up to them and let them pick him up. With the nights getting colder, the couple decided to take him to the vet rather than leave him outside.

Unfortunately, the examination revealed that he’d been having a rough time. He was dehydrated, extremely hungry, and full of worms. The missing fur around his nose suggested he’d spent quite a while rummaging through garbage looking for food. He also had no microchip, and the vet was confident nobody was caring for him.

The couple already had a cat at home, so adopting another wasn’t part of their plans. But after the kitten tested negative for FIV and received parasite treatments, they brought him home and settled him into a separate room.

Their resident cat has already started sniffing the newcomer through the gap beneath the door. We wonder what the poor kitty thinks about suddenly having a potential roommate. Imagine minding your own business when your humans return from taking out the trash with another cat!

The couple is still checking local Facebook groups in case someone is missing him, although they haven’t found an owner. They’ve also spotted similar kittens nearby and suspect he may have been born outdoors earlier in the summer.

After a night indoors, the little guy was already enjoying a full belly and a warm blanket. It’s a wonderful change for a kitten who’d been searching through garbage just hours earlier.

The Cat Distribution System strikes again, and this time, apparently, it offers curbside pickup.
