Apple’s iPhone Sales Hit a Record Even Without a Base iPhone 18

Apple didn’t need a regular iPhone 18 to set a new iPhone sales record. Apple’s latest earnings report shows $114.5 billion in revenue for the September quarter, up 12% from a year ago, and executives said on the earnings call that iPhone sales alone reached $57.6 billion, up 17%.

That’s a notable result for a company that has raised prices on its phones. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, which is $100 more than last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, and Apple skipped the standard iPhone 18 when it announced its new lineup in September.

Apple doesn’t say which models sold best, so it’s hard to know how much credit the new Pro phones deserve. It also stopped reporting how many phones it sells years ago, so the dollar figures are the only measure we get. Based on the 17% growth rate, iPhone revenue is up roughly $8 billion from the same quarter last year.

Only nine days of iPhone 18 Pro sales counted

The quarter ended September 26, and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max didn’t go on sale until September 18. That leaves just nine days of sales from the new phones in these numbers. The foldable iPhone Duo isn’t in the results at all, since it didn’t reach customers until October 23.

Apple also said more people upgraded their iPhones than in any previous September quarter. That record held worldwide and in the U.S., mainland China and India. Services, which covers things like iCloud and Apple Music, set an all-time record at $31.6 billion. For the full fiscal year, Apple’s revenue hit $478.8 billion, up 15%.

A bigger holiday quarter is next, if Apple can build enough phones

Apple expects revenue to grow 7% to 10% in the December quarter, which it says would be the best quarter in its history. Then comes the catch. Executives said supply is tight across iPhone, Mac and iPad, and Apple expects its profit margin to slip because memory chips cost more than they used to.

Why does that matter to you? Memory is in every phone, and Apple’s bill for it keeps climbing. The company is also already struggling to keep the $1,999 iPhone Duo in stock, with new orders showing delivery weeks away.

If there’s an iPhone on your holiday list, ordering early is the safer move. Apple’s own forecast assumes supply stays tight through the end of the year.
