1954 MG TF

This 1954 MG TF was purchased new in Holland and was soon relocated to California, where the car is said to have spent time with two owners in that state prior to the seller’s purchase in 2025. The vehicle was stored indoors from 1973 to 2021, when it was recommissioned with work highlighted by overhauling the brakes and the fuel system, replacing the tires, and servicing the engine. Finished in MG Red over red upholstery, the car is powered by a 1,250cc XPAG inline-four paired with a four-speed manual transmission. An MGA-sourced rear axle, an MG TC cylinder head, and an upgraded valvetrain reportedly were installed by the original owner, who used the MG to participate in rally and hill-climb competition. Features include dual SU carburetors, a black soft top, 15″ wire wheels, wind wings, side mirrors, side curtains, and a radio. This TF is now offered with service records since 2020, an assortment of spare parts, a workshop manual, a tool kit, and a California title in the seller’s name.

The car was finished from the factory in MG Red (C) and is equipped with a black soft top and corresponding side curtains. Exterior features include a bright grille, Lucas tri-bar headlamps, louvered hood panels, fender-mounted mirrors, a folding windshield, wind wings, running boards, rear-hinged doors, dual horns, and chrome bumpers. The seller notes that the paint, top, and curtains exhibit wear.

Chrome-finished 15″ wire wheels with knock-off hubs are mounted with 165/80 Nexen SB-802 tires, and a spare is affixed to the rear of the vehicle. The five tires were replaced in 2021 and the wheels were serviced. The brakes were overhauled that same year by replacing the shoes, hoses, and hydraulics and also turning the drums. An invoice in the gallery indicates that a replacement brake master cylinder was installed around 2023.

The cabin features low-back bucket seats trimmed in red upholstery that are complemented by a color-coordinated dash pad, door panels, and carpeting. A push-button radio is positioned in the open glove compartment on the passenger side of the dash.

The banjo-style steering wheel fronts Jaeger instrumentation consisting of a 105-mph speedometer with an inset clock, a tachometer, and a combination gauge for coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 15k miles, approximately 25 of which were added by the seller.

The 1,250cc XPAG inline-four has been updated with an MG TC cylinder head plus larger valves and stronger valve springs, the seller tells us. The dual SU carburetors and the engine were serviced in 2021, the fuel tank was cleaned, the fuel pump and pressure lines were replaced, and the valves were adjusted. Invoices in the gallery indicate that the thermostat and its housing were replaced in 2024, while the choke cable and engine mount were replaced in 2026.

The engine stamping is shown above.

The four-speed manual transmission is linked to a 4.3:1-final-drive MGA rear axle that is said to have been installed decades ago under original ownership.

Items that will accompany the vehicle include recent service records, a workshop manual, and a parts catalog as well as the following unused spare parts:

  • Reproduction steering wheel
  • Water pump, thermostat, and associated gaskets and hoses
  • Low-fuel-level sender and gaskets
  • Engine mounts and tie bar
  • Pedal pads
  • Seal, hoses, clamps, and other various small parts

The car’s chassis number is HDC461210, whereas the California title cites the serialized portion of the engine number XPAG30744 as the VIN. The title also notes the MG’s body type as an abbreviation for “coupe”.
