33-Years-Owned 1961 Porsche 356B Notchback Project

This 1961 Porsche 356B notchback is a running and driving project that was acquired by the current owner in 1993. The car is powered by a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle and has been refinished in red over black leatherette. Features include 15″ steel wheels, a driver-side mirror, vent windows, body-color bumpers, an AM radio, a cabin heater, and front bucket seats. This 356B notchback is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and a clean California title in the owner’s name, listing it as a 1962 model year.

The T5 body was introduced for the 1960 model year with revised front-end styling, including raised bumpers and headlights along with a redesigned front trunk lid handle. This Karmann-built notchback example came finished from the factory in Ivory and was repainted red under prior ownership. Paint cracks, bubbling, fading, and other imperfections are shown up close in the gallery.

The 15″ vented steel wheels wear hubcaps with Porsche crests and are mounted with Mirage MR-162 tires. The car was factory equipped with drum brakes at each corner.

The front bucket seats and rear jump seats are upholstered in black leatherette, and interior appointments include an AM radio, a cabin heater, shoulder belts, and a body-color painted dashboard. The dash pad is damaged and there are tears in the driver’s seat.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames green-letter VDO instrumentation including a 120-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 5k-rpm redline as well as a combination gauge for oil temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 96k miles, and total mileage is unknown. The fuel level gauge is not accurate.

The replacement 1.6-liter flat-four was sourced from a 1960 356B and installed by the current owner some time ago.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed manual transaxle. There is rust in the floors, battery box, and longitudinals.

The Porsche Certificate of Authenticity shows the factory colors and serial numbers.
