This 1989 Volkswagen Jetta is one of 500 Canadian-market Trophy 16V models built and was first sold by Auto Hamer Inc. of Montreal, Quebec, subsequently moving to Ontario before it was sold on BaT in March 2020. Based on the Canadian-market GTX 16V, the Trophy was also powered by a 16-valve 1.8L inline-four paired with a five-speed manual gearbox, and all were equipped with a rear spoiler, a front lip, Recaro seats, power steering, power windows and mirrors, and a sunroof. This example was specified in optional Midnight Blue Pearl with color-matched BBS RA 15″ alloy wheels – a Trophy-only shade – and it retains its unique quarter panel decals. The timing belt, tensior, and air-conditioning compressor were replaced and the system was recharged in 2025, and the battery was replaced in preparation for the sale. This GLI 16V Trophy shows 22k kilometers (~14k miles) is now offered at no reserve as part of The Tons Of Gas Auto Collection with a clean Carfax report and a clean North Carolina title.

Unlike the US-market Wolfsburg Edition GLI, all of which were specified in Helios Blue Metallic for the 1989 model year, the GTX-based Trophy was offered in four colors and was simply badged “Jetta 16V”. Midnight Blue Pearl (LC5V) was a Trophy-only shade, and the car has black bumpers and trim, a front air dam, a flush rear spoiler, plastic fender trim, unique Trophy quarter-panel decals, and a Fuba roof antenna.

Additional features include Jetta-logo splash guards, Wolfsburg fender badges, and a crank-operated sunroof. Window etchings and factory French-language decals can be seen in the gallery below.

Color-matched 15″ BBS RA alloys were standard on the Midnight Blue Pearl Trophy models and are shod in older 185/55 Continental SportContact tires here. A space-saver spare is fitted under the trunk floor along with a factory jack. Braking is handled by power-assisted discs at all four corners.

The interior is trimmed in black vinyl and gray cloth over Recaro Trophy sport seats. Additional features include air conditioning, power windows, and a Volkswagen Design cassette stereo.

Trophy models also feature a leather-wrapped steering wheel and emergency brake lever handle. Instruments include 260-kph speedometer, a tachometer with a 7,200-rpm redline, a digital clock, an onboard computer, and supplementary gauges. Just under 22k kilometers (~14k miles) are shown on the six-digit odometer.

The PL-code 16-valve 1.8L DOHC inline-four featured a cast iron block, an aluminum cylinder head, hydraulic lifters, and Bosch KE-Jetronic port fuel injection for a factory rating of 123 horsepower when new. Power is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual gearbox. The timing belt, tensior, and air-conditioning compressor were replaced and the system was recharged in 2025, and the battery was replaced in preparation for the sale.
