Vintage Motorcars 550 Spyder Replica

This 550 Spyder replica was built by Vintage Motorcars of Hawaiian Gardens, California, circa 2011. It is finished in silver over red upholstery and is powered by an air-cooled 2.6-liter flat-four linked to a four-speed manual transaxle with a limited-slip differential. Equipment includes dual Weber carburetors, a hydraulically actuated clutch, a center-exit exhaust, Bilstein coilovers, disc brakes, 15″ wheels, LED lighting, heated seats, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and Crow harnesses. Acquired by the current owner on BaT in November 2024, this 550 Spyder replica is now offered on dealer consignment with a California title listing the car as a specially constructed or modified vehicle without a model year.

The car features fiberglass bodywork mounted over a tubular-steel frame, and exterior details include a driver-side mirror, Porsche and Spyder badging, LED headlights, rear-fender air intakes, and leather straps for the engine and trunk covers.

The polished-aluminum 15” wheels are wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS Pole Position tires measuring 185/65 up front and 195/60 out back. The suspension incorporates Bilstein adjustable coilovers, and stopping power is provided by four-wheel disc brakes.

The cockpit is appointed with red diamond-stitched seat upholstery and gray square-weave carpeting. Equipment includes seat heaters, Crow latch-and-link harnesses, an EMPI accelerator pedal, a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, and an ivory-tone shift knob and switchgear.

The wood-rim steering wheel fronts a 130-mph speedometer and a 6k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for temperature and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 7k miles, approximately 200 of which were added under current ownership.

The mid-mounted Volkswagen Type IV air-cooled flat-four is said to have been assembled by FAT Performance with 2.6-liter displacement, dual Weber carburetors, a remote oil filter, and an external oil cooler with a thermostatically controlled electric fan. Work performed in 2023/2024 is said to have included overhauling the electrical system, installing a high-torque starter, and replacing the valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, ignition wires, and distributor cap and rotor. An oil change was carried out, and the carburetors were adjusted in preparation for the sale, according to the seller.

Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle reportedly equipped with taller “Freeway Flyer” gearing and a limited-slip differential. A CNC hydraulic clutch-actuation kit and MagnaFlow mufflers were installed under previous ownership.
