1970 Volvo 1800E

This Volvo 1800E was ordered for pickup in London, United Kingdom, and was delivered in July 1970. It was imported into the United States in September of that year, and it thereafter resided with its original owner in New Jersey for nearly half a century. After changing hands for the first time circa 2017, the car was refurbished, with work that included a repaint in Dark Green, suspension and brake overhauls, installation of a replacement M41 manual gearbox, and replacement of the carpeting and various trim elements. Now showing 171k miles, the car is powered by a 2.0-liter B20E inline-four and is equipped with 15″ Clover wheels, Tan leather upholstery, a Volvo pushbutton radio, and overdrive. Acquired by the selling dealer, a BaT Local Partner, earlier this year, this 1800E is offered with original purchase documents, further ownership records and invoices, and a clean Colorado title.

The car was refinished in its original Dark Green (94) during the refurbishment circa 2017, and trim elements replaced at that time included the grille surround, windshield grommets, windshield glass, and lighting components.

The 15″ Clover wheels are mounted with Michelin XZX radial tires. The suspension and brake systems were overhauled during the refurbishment, with work that included fitting stainless-steel brake lines and replacing the:

  • shocks and springs
  • suspension and chassis bushings
  • brake calipers, rotors, and pads
  • parking brake shoes
  • brake booster

The front bucket seats and rear bench are trimmed in Tan leather, and interior appointments include a padded dashboard, a rear parcel shelf, an AM/FM radio, a heated rear window, flow-through ventilation, and a heater. The black carpeting was installed during the refurbishment.

The three-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and gauges for oil and coolant temperature. An analog clock and readouts for fuel level and oil pressure reside in the center of the dashboard. The six-digit odometer shows 171k miles.

The 2.0-liter B20E inline-four is equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory rated at 130 horsepower and 130 lb-ft of torque. The fuel pump was installed in 2017, the radiator was replaced in 2018, and work in preparation for the sale has included adjusting the ignition timing and the fuel injection system.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a replacement four-speed M41 manual transmission that was rebuilt prior to installation circa 2019. Related invoices are shown in the gallery below. The gearbox is linked with an overdrive unit.
