Ex–BMW Classic, 300-Kilometer Euro 1996 BMW 528i 5-Speed

This 1996 BMW 528i was first registered by BMW AG on January 23, 1996, and deregistered two weeks later on February 7, 1996. It subsequently spent nearly three decades in storage as part of the company’s collection before being sold by BMW Group Classic in July 2023 with 101 kilometers (~63 miles) on the odometer. Finished in Arctic Silver Metallic over gray Montana leather with Technical Graphite interior trim, the car is powered by an M52 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a five-speed manual transmission. It rides on 15” Style 31 wheels and was specified from the factory with the HiFi System Professional DSP stereo along with a sunroof, heated front seats, and rear parking sensors. Acquired by the current owner in 2023, this 528i now has 300 kilometers (~186 miles) and is offered by the seller on behalf of the owner in Germany with manufacturer’s literature, service records, a 2023 vehicle appraisal, and German registration.

Designed by Joji Nagashima, the E39 was revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1995 to replace the E34. The fourth-generation 5-Series was built in sedan and wagon form through 2004 and was the first BMW to achieve over 1.5 million unit sales.

A copy of the German Fahrzeugbrief issued to the Bavarian Motor Works Corporation for this E39 on January 23, 1996, is shown above. According to a 2023 appraisal on display in the gallery, the car was moved to the BMW Museum in Munich for preparation, but was instead kept in storage.

The body is finished in Arctic Silver Metallic. A sunroof, fog lights, headlight washers, and rear parking sensors are further details.

The 15″ Style 31 Wheels were reportedly mounted with Dunlop SP Sport 2000 tires in 2023. Stopping power is from ventilated discs at all four corners.

The heated and power-adjustable front seats are trimmed in gray Montana leather, which extends to the rear bench. The cabin is accented by Technical Graphite trim, and additional amenities include the HiFi System Professional DSP stereo as well as automatic climate control and cruise control.

The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather and frames a 240-km/h speedometer, a tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature, instant fuel economy, and fuel level. The digital odometer indicates 300 kilometers (~186 miles).

The 2.8-liter M52 inline-six has a factory rating of 193 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, and it sends power to the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. In July 2023, the battery, fuel pumps, and hood struts were replaced by BMW Group Classic.

The vehicle is being sold on its German registration, which serves as an ownership document in Germany. The seller notes that the car is registered as a historic vehicle.
