Apple’s imminent MacBook Pro launch offers plenty of reasons to be excited, not least the fact that it’s expected to feature an OLED touchscreen display: the first on an Apple laptop. But one of the other rumored upgrades no longer appears to be on the menu.
Having predicted on multiple occasions that the touchscreen MacBook Pro would be thinner than current models, well-connected leaker Mark Gurman has this week played down that aspect of the redesign. Responding to a tweet on Wednesday night, he expressed doubt about the prospect of it being “significantly thinner” after all.
“Apple is about to redesign [its 16-inch MacBook Pro] in 20 days to be significantly thinner according to Gurman,” the tweet read in part.
“I don’t think it’ll be significantly thinner in the end,” Gurman replied.
This is something of a disappointment, not to mention a change of heart, given statements the leaker made towards the end of last year. In October 2025 he claimed Apple was implementing a thinner and lighter design, having predicted this as long ago as November 2024. Then in November 2025 he yet again said the device would have a “thinner chassis” (subscription required) as well as its OLED display and touch support.
To emphasise the significance of this, Gurman at the time explicitly named the OLED MacBook Pro, along with what turned out to be the MacBook Neo, as Apple products which “mark major shifts.” He contrasted these products with other imminent Mac launches, which he said wouldn’t feature “any major external hardware design changes.”
The good news is that, despite apparently not being noticeably thinner, the device will be noticeably lighter. As recently as this week Gurman said the OLED MacBook Pro would be “significantly lighter” than current models (emphasis his), with a major internal redesign consolidating parts to make it easier to carry. He reiterated that position in the Twitter exchange above, replying at one point with the emphatic, “Lighter!”
The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to launch within the next month or so, and could be part of the rumored batch of releases in the last week of October. For all the latest news and rumors, bookmark our regularly updated touchscreen MacBook Pro hub.
