28-Years-Owned 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL 4-Speed

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280SL was acquired by the current owner in 1998 and was recommissioned in 2026 following several years of storage. Work included replacing the clutch hydraulic cylinders, fuel pump, fuel tank, heater and brake hoses, ignition components, fuel injectors, cold star valve, and shifter bushings. It has been refinished in red over Brown MB-Tex and is powered by a 2.8-liter inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. Equipment includes a black convertible top, a removable hardtop, power steering, 14″ steel wheels with painted covers, a Nardi steering wheel, and a Blaupunkt cassette radio. This W113 SL is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with the owner’s manual, service records, spare parts, a data plate, original purchase documents, and a New Mexico title.

The W113 SL was designed by Friedrich Geiger, Béla Barényi, and Paul Bracq and was introduced to the public at the 1963 Geneva Motor Show. This example was finished from the factory in Tobacco Brown (423) and was repainted its current shade of red some time ago. Features include a black soft top, a removable hardtop, a driver-side mirror, and US-specification headlights. Touch-up paint was applied to chips in preparation for the sale, and the seller notes dings on the doors and areas of overspray. There are tears in the soft top, and other blemishes are shown up close in the gallery.

The 14″ steel wheels feature covers with painted centers and are mounted with Ironman tires measuring 195/75. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted four-wheel discs. The brake hoses were replaced in July 2026.

The cabin houses bucket seats upholstered in Brown MB-Tex that extends to the door panels. Interior appointments include a Blaupunkt cassette radio, an analog clock, a floor-mounted gear shifter, and a heater. The shifter bushings were replaced in 2026. The seller notes wear in the interior, stiff and broken heater levers, and cracks on the lower dash pad.

The wood-rimmed Nardi steering wheel features a chrome horn ring and frames a 140-mph speedometer and a tachometer with a 6,500-rpm redline as well as gauges for fuel level, oil pressure, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 40k miles, which is not considered to be accurate. Approximately 2k miles were added under current ownership, and total mileage is unknown. The tachometer is inoperative.

The 2.8-liter M130 inline-six was factory equipped with Bosch fuel injection and was rated at 180 horsepower and 193 lb-ft of torque when new. Work in 2026 following several years of storage included replacing the following components:

  • Fuel tank and hoses
  • Fuel level sending unit
  • Fuel pump and filter
  • Fuel injectors
  • Battery and hold-down frame
  • Heater hoses
  • Spark plugs and wires
  • Ignition coil
  • Distributor cap and rotor
  • Cold start valve

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission. The clutch hydraulic cylinders were replaced in 2026.

The New Mexico title lists “Mileage in Excess of Mechanical Limits” under the odometer code section.
