34-Years-Owned 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia 4-Speed at No Reserve

This 1984 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia was acquired in 1992 by the seller, who tells us the van served as their daily driver for the ensuing decade. A liquid-cooled 2.1L flat-four was installed in place of the factory 1.9-liter component in 2002, and recommissioning work between 2022 and 2024 is said to have included repairing the wiring, servicing the valves, and installing a 140-amp alternator, a propane heater, a 100-Ah lithium house battery, a Rocky Mountain Westy grille guard and bumpers, and GoWesty starter motor and external utility hookups as well as changing the speedometer cable, catalytic converter, distributor, mass airflow and oxygen sensors, headlights, tires, and more as listed below. Finished in beige over brown upholstery, the van also features LED exterior lightbulbs, 14″ alloy wheels, a heater, and a cassette stereo with an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter. The rear cabin is outfitted with a stowable swivel table, storage compartments, water tanks, window curtains, sleeping accommodations, and a kitchenette with a refrigerator, a two-burner propane stove, and a sink that dispenses both hot and cold water. Now showing 190k miles, this is offered at no reserve with a seller-supplied service list, spare parts, a clean Carfax report, and a California title in the name of the seller’s family trust.

The van was repainted in beige in 1990, and it has been fitted with a Rocky Mountain Westy Twin Peaks front bumper, grille guard, and rear bumper as well as Land Rover-sourced side mirrors. Additional work carried out between 2022 and 2024 included adjusting the sliding right-rear door, servicing the windshield washer system, and replacing the antenna, passenger-side window, tailgate support struts, drip rails, and headlights as well as installing LED turn signal, marker light, and brake light bulbs.

Five-spoke 14″ alloy wheels with visible oxidation were mounted with Hankook tires circa 2022. The van was factory equipped with an independent front and rear suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. Stopping power is provided by power-assisted front disc and rear drum brakes.

The front seats are trimmed in brown, and they are accompanied by color-coordinated Bus Depot door panels. Appointments include a heater, crank windows, replacement stereo speakers, a front windshield privacy curtain, and an AM/FM/cassette stereo with an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter as well as a Rocky Mountain Westy locking storage compartment beneath the front passenger’s seat.

The rear compartment features storage cabinets and a two-passenger rear bench seat, which is trimmed in Van Dyke Brown, blue, and white striped fabric and folds into a bed. A second bed platform with zip-open windows is housed in the pop-top. Camping equipment includes a stowable swivel table, a cargo-area storage unit, a water storage tank, a hatch mosquito net, window curtains, residential-style power outlets with USB connectors, and a kitchenette with a refrigerator and a two-burner propane stove. The seller tells us that the sink is fed by both a cold water tank and a custom-built five-gallon hot water tank that supplies 120°F water, and modifications installed between 2022 and 2024 include the following components:

  • 100-Ah lithium house battery with trickle charger
  • 1,500-watt power inverter with USB power outlet
  • GoWesty high-capacity propane tank
  • Whale water tank pump
  • SEAFLO 21 Series hot water pump
  • Foldable sink faucet
  • Propex HS2211 external propane heater
  • GoWesty water tank connector
  • GoWesty 110-volt connector
  • GoWesty solar connector
  • Custom-fabricated graywater tank
  • LED interior light above sink

The two-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation consisting of an 85-mph speedometer and an analog clock with inset coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. The six-digit odometer shows 190k miles, approximately 100k of which were added under current ownership. The seller notes that the van received a replacement speedometer cable, instrument wiring, and LED gauge backlighting within the last four years.

The seller tells us that the retrofitted liquid-cooled 2.1L flat-four had accumulated approximately 106k miles before being installed beneath the rear bed platform in 2002, and it drives the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. Work carried out between 2022 and 2024 is said to have included servicing the valves, repairing the wiring, and installing a 140-amp alternator, an aftermarket firewall fuel line adapter, and a GoWesty gear-reduction starter motor as well as replacing the mass airflow meter, distributor, oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, engine mounts, and various fuel and vacuum lines.

Additional photos of the included parts are presented in the gallery along with a seller-supplied service summary, which has a partial list of spares.

The Carfax report is free of accidents or other reported damage.

The seller states that the van cannot pass a California emissions test. It is currently registered as Planned Non-Operation (PNO) in the state of California.
