October is black cat season. They’re everywhere on Halloween decorations, perched beside pumpkins, and featured in every witchy movie imaginable. But finding an actual black kitten in your backyard during spooky season? That’s a Halloween surprise most cat lovers would have a hard time turning down.
Black cats have spent centuries dealing with silly superstitions about bad luck, which is especially unfair considering how adorable they are. We’d argue that finding one is pretty lucky, particularly when that little kitty needs someone to take them in. Forget four-leaf clovers. We’d happily take a miniature house panther any day.
One college student recently got an unexpected opportunity to welcome a little Halloween magic into their life. They’d just finished their midterms when they noticed messages from both their brother and sister-in-law. Since neither usually texted without a reason, the double notification was suspicious.
The mystery was solved when both sent pictures of a black kitten who had apparently been dumped in their yard.
The student and their boyfriend immediately gathered a crate, bought kitten food, and headed over to collect him. No elaborate planning or weeks of debating whether they were ready for another pet. There was a kitten who needed a home, and they were going to get him.
We love how quickly cat people can mobilize when there’s a kitten involved. Getting someone to agree on dinner plans might take three days and seventeen messages, but mention a homeless kitten and suddenly everyone’s ready to leave the house.
The couple already had a cat, which meant their newest family member would have to win over more than just his humans. Cats can be pretty particular about sharing their territory, especially when a stranger suddenly arrives expecting access to all the good napping spots.
Two weeks later, their resident kitty is finally starting to come around to the newcomer. Hopefully, the household will soon have two little partners in crime instead of one suspicious cat wondering who invited the new guy.
The kitten has officially been named Momo, and he’s settling into life with his new family.
It’s a lovely ending to what could have been a difficult situation for an abandoned little cat. Instead of spending October alone outdoors, Momo has people who went out of their way to bring him home.
Who needs Halloween candy when you can get a whole black kitten instead?
