Salon Ceases Publication

Salon, in an unsigned goodbye post:

Thirty-one years is a remarkable run, but what matters most is
what happened during those years: the journalism, the ideas, the
voices, the conversations and the community that grew around them.
Salon helped demonstrate what digital journalism could be and
could become. We hope that legacy will continue to matter long
after today.

Andy Baio:

I hope the archives stay online, but considering the care taken
for this announcement, I doubt it.

Salon felt old and established when I started Daring Fireball in 2002. They were pioneers of treating the web as a first-class medium. A quick search indicates that I’ve linked to Salon in 27 posts here, starting with this one in 2003 (which was primarily a retort to a Paul Boutin column for Slate), and most recently with this April 2025 post that linked to a 2013 Salon article.
