GM Caves In And Brings Back Android Auto, Apple CarPlay In 2027 Silverado And Sierra

  • The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra have a new user experience.
  • Customers can expect intuitive layouts, modern graphics, and new features.
  • Super Cruise has streamlined activation and new displays when in use.

Chevrolet unveiled the redesigned Silverado 1500 on June 16, and GMC followed up with the Sierra a few weeks later. Unfortunately, neither brand has said much about them since then.

That’s a questionable strategy for some of the most popular vehicles in America, but General Motors is filling in some of the blanks by unveiling their new user experience. It promises “state-of-the-art graphics, intuitive layouts, and deeply integrated intelligence.”

While GM said a lot without saying much of substance, they noted the trucks are equipped with high-contrast displays that deliver “deeper blacks, richer colors, and sharper visual depth.” They also noted there’s a new home screen, which has a split-view layout as default. It shows an interactive map as well as media or other vehicle information. The basic idea is that navigation should always be front and center.

The digital instrument cluster also promises to have “mode-aware” displays. In effect, the experience will change when you’re using Super Cruise, going off-roading, or towing a trailer.

Speaking of Super Cruise, accessing it has been streamlined as hands-free driving is now just one button away. GM also said there’s a new 3D visualization, which gives “drivers greater confidence” as it shows them what the vehicle sees in real time.

Furthermore, when using hands-free trailering, the interface automatically adapts. GM said it shows a “dedicated trailering visualization in the instrument cluster” as well as a “trailering card” on the infotainment system.

Other highlights include personalized and quick-access controls, which make it easy to get to commonly used apps and features. The company has also revamped how incoming calls are handled, as there’s simply a small call timer at the top of the display. This means incoming calls won’t interfere with navigation or other important information.

As for the newly available front passenger display, it provides access to an assortment of entertainment apps including AMC+, DIRECTV, Disney+, Hulu, Tubi, and YouTube. Other choices include Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, SiriusXM, and TuneIn. To prevent drivers from getting distracted by The Walking Dead, content is only visible to the passenger while the vehicle is in motion.

Lastly, the system now has native integration of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The automaker said, “Content appears in a large card window alongside native apps like trailering and vehicle status. Drivers can seamlessly move between the two experiences, taking advantage of the features developed specifically for their truck and their device.”
